English & Language Arts Teacher BlogThis blog is for secondary English, ELA, and language arts teachers filled with lesson plans, humor, product recommendations, teaching ideas, tips, and tricks and much more! Hello again, teacher superheroes! 😀
The second half of the school year hits differently, doesn’t it? Our students are reading, they’re talking, and they’re even writing — but somehow the evidence is still missing, misused, or completely disconnected from the claim. The Tuesday before Christmas break hits differently, doesn’t it? Our students are buzzing with excitement, our brains are juggling grading, events, and loose ends, and we’re all running on caffeine, candy canes, and determination!
That’s why today’s strategy pairs our classroom practice with a fascinating bit of psychology called the Primacy Effect—the idea that we remember the first thing we learn better than what comes later. When we use this intentionally, it can completely transform how our students retain information about theme, character, and tone.
That’s where the Chunk and Chew strategy comes in—a simple but powerful method for keeping students engaged and actively processing text as they read.
Hello again, teacher superheroes!
If your students light up when you mention music but groan when you mention literary analysis, this strategy is for you. The Music + Literature Connections method bridges the gap between what students love and what we want them to learn—helping them see that literature and lyrics aren’t so different after all. 🎶 This strategy invites students to pick a modern song that connects to a theme, character, or mood from a text you’re studying. Then, they justify their choice using textual evidence from both the song and the story. The result? Students begin to see the deeper connections between emotion, motivation, and meaning—and they have fun doing it. |
