Helpful Stuff & Recommendations To be the very best teachers we can be we need to stay on top of our health, not just the physical but also the mental. Enter Verilux Happy Light! (Amazon affiliate link) I have this lamp resting on my bookshelf in my home office and I turn it on as soon as I wake up in the morning because experts recommend exposing your body (your eyes, your skin —everything) to unfiltered sunlight as soon as you can after waking up. Check out this article from Web MD stating the benefits of sunlight exposure such as vitamin D production, better sleep by regulating your internal clock (circadian rhythm), weight loss, better moods, eye health, and skin benefits! This is unrealistic for most teachers since most of us are up and on our way to work before the sun even comes up, this is a nice way to get the best of both worlds! Added benefit: you won’t be the weirdo on your campus walking around with your shirt off trying to get that necessary sunlight! This is the Verilux Happy Light I have in my home office. We’ve all heard of the amazing book, The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman (Amazon affiliate link 🙃) for our personal relationships, but you can also apply these powerful relationship-building techniques to strengthen your classroom culture. Just like we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to education, the same should be done with discipline and helping students realize more of their academic and personal potential. Check out this article entitled “The 5 Love Languages in the Classroom” to help you get started! Try it out and let us know how it goes! A Little Inspiration Don’t wait until retirement to start living. Fun should be scheduled and/or snuck into every day —even today! So go to that park, or that new cafe in town, or just sit outside with a cup of tea and relax, or watch that movie with your family & friends —have a little fun today, because tomorrow is never promised! Helpful Stuff Have you ever thought about creating a teacher Amazon wish list to proactively inform parents what you need? If not, I will get started on it right away! Include the link in your email signature (and print your wish list’s name on all printed correspondence going home) because most parents are more than happy to help you in any way they can! Check out this article for a step-by-step process on how to set up an Amazon wish list for your classroom! Try it out and let us know how it goes! Recommendations We all know it's easier to start the year off strong and loosen the reins later than to start off loose and trying to tighten the reins later. That being said, I would suggest planning for whatever changes you need to make to your classroom organization, management, or teaching style that will help you start the year off strong and spare you trying to change things once school is underway. Here’s a incredibly helpful video on classroom management for both Middle School and High School from the Five Foot One Teacher on YouTube: A Little Inspiration As always, please forward this to any teacher that could benefit from this message and help spread the love!

Helpful Stuff As school starts back up, let’s be mindful to go through professional development with a humble and open mind to learning something new. We have all been there: another training that has little or nothing to do with your subject matter, classroom culture, even grade level. But there is something in each training session that you can walk away with. Whether it’s a new helpful website, a book recommendation, or even just a few inspirational words. Let’s keep in mind that ultimately we are there to serve our students in the best way we can and if that means sitting apart fro our usual colleagues that spend the whole training session griping and being negative instead of actually applying themselves, then I support you breaking away even if only temporary to become a better teacher with a better mindset. Recommendations Check out these awesome 14 classroom organization ideas to help you save time and your sanity! A Little Inspiration Maybe the “winner” is the one that enjoyed the moment the most.
