English & Language Arts Teacher BlogThis blog is for secondary English, ELA, and language arts teachers filled with lesson plans, humor, product recommendations, teaching ideas, tips, and tricks and much more! Back again, teacher superheroes! Helpful Stuff If you don’t already use it, please check out Google Calendar! It’s been a total game-changer for me and my family. I would recommend using different emails for different calendars. For example, I use my school email for my work-related Google Calendar, and my personal email for our family Google Calendar which shows upcoming family events, the kids’ medical appointments, kids’ school activities, etc. My wife is subscribed to my personal email’s calendar so she will see only those events and not my work calendar, which would just clutter her screen. Check out this great tutorial on how to set it up! Try it out and let us know how it goes! Recommendations Our Back-to-School TPT Sale is coming August 9-11, 2023, for 10% off our *ENTIRE* store! What makes our products different? All of our products were created by teachers for teachers. Our goal behind every one of our middle school & high school reading tests is to help students succeed at reading by familiarizing them with the question structure, vocabulary, and rigor that they will see throughout their years in school. And as a wonderful byproduct, we can now save great teachers across the globe time by providing them with quality reading assessments they know will challenge their students and prepare them for success on standardized exams. Check out what some teachers have graciously said about our stuff! I recommend adding our products to your TPT shopping cart now and setting a reminder to purchase during the sale in your awesome new Google calendar! We all need to stop “multi-tasking”! I am the first one to admit that I am guilty of this. Very guilty of this. Multitasking is a myth, especially when the tasks are cognitively intense, like reading a text for deep understanding while listening to music—save your time and mental energy. We need to focus on doing one thing WELL at a time, then we can move on to the next! This has increased my productivity, comprehension, and retention by at least 10X! Another week, another opportunity for improvement! 🙏 But First, A Chuckle! 7 types of summer teachers Helpful Stuff Summertime is a great time to recharge and really focus on getting our health back on track, not only for the upcoming school year, but for our family and for ourselves. Here is a fantastic podcast show called "The Doctor's Farmacy" with a doctor named Mark Hyman, MD, and this episode is one of the greatest I’ve heard so far! This episode is titled “How to Lose Belly Fat” but should really have a more inclusive title because he covers everything from the poor-quality food we eat, our microbiome & gut health, and many of the repercussions from our food & lifestyle choices. It’s an amazingly concise yet informative podcast! Recommendations Remember how in past emails we mentioned focusing on small improvements every day rather than major changes done every once in a while? One great, positive small change you can do today perhaps even right now is take a small walk whether it’s just around the block, up and down a few flights of stairs nearby, or just circles in your living room. Movement is a key to good health, and you just took action on improving yours, so great job! Virtual high-five! A Little Inspiration One of the greatest motivational messages ever from one of my favorite speakers ever —Les Brown. Check it out! “It’s Possible!” by Les Brown. Some teachers have mentioned feeling bad or guilty about wanting to leave the profession. Don’t! Everything has its time and season! Some of us want nothing more than to be a teacher until we can’t work anymore. Some of us only came to teaching until we found work that really touched us. Do whatever you need to do for YOU. You do YOU, Boo-Boo. You don’t owe anyone outside your close circle of loved ones any notice nor explanations. Recommendations While we are on the topic of life & career decisions, let us continue this lifelong journey of self compassion for this summer…even if it’s just through email, haha. The goal is to learn how to love ourselves as teachers and as individuals as we currently are while also striving to become a better version of ourselves. Like one of my favorite podcasters Ed Mylett has put it, it is a state of “Blissful Dissatisfaction“. It is to revel in the present moment’s blessings while simultaneously passionately working towards our goals. Below is the link (Amazon affiliate link) to the amazing workbook I’ve been using to help guide this journey of self-compassion. I recommend the paperback version as it is under $20 or you can even get a used (pre-owned but black) one for under $10! The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook: A Proven Way to Accept Yourself, Build Inner Strength, and Thrive The first chapter of this book helps define self-compassion in a way as treating yourself like you would a good friend. It also includes the powerful idea that we must recognize that all humans are flawed works-in-progress, that everyone fails, makes mistakes, and experiences hardships in life. A Little Inspiration Just like mentioned above remember that we are all works-in-progress. We are each running our own race, with it’s own set of hurdles. So we shouldn’t compare our journeys to those of others. As simple as this is, it is just as easy to forget. So be kind to others and yourself.
