3/26/24: Helping student writers grow, taking care of yourself, and some more motivation!

Is it summer yet? 🤣

But First, A Chuckle!

Student: Did we do anything while I was absent?

Teacher: Nope we just sat here waiting for your victorious return.

Helpful Stuff

Here’s a fantastic tip to help you help your students improve their writing:

Set goals (and personalized individual goals) for each student and each writing assignment.

Instead of trying to cover everything in one single writing assignment, perhaps the student can focus on writing 3 paragraphs with great topic sentences and supporting details after.

That way you and your students don’t get so overwhelmed!

This fantastic episode of The Ed Mylett podcast really reminds us about the importance of self-care and not putting our needs behind those of the ones we love.

A powerful quote from the episode:

“And so there's a difference between loving somebody and accepting them. My great friends, I tell 'em all the time, man, I love you. I believe in you, but I don't want 'em to accept all my stuff. I want them to expect of me better than I'm doing. I want them to believe in me and love me so much that they see the version of me I could be that I'm capable of becoming. I think that's what a great friend does.”

We’re excited to be back!

Helpful Stuff

I just found this incredible YouTube video from an English teacher on how to keep students engaged in writing all year by focusing on a topic they are passionate about.

The central concept is having students write in multiple genres about an interesting topic they choose at the beginning of the year, in order to ensure engagement.

Teach writing with the passion paper project where it's year-long writing on one topic covering different genres of writing

Check out the video below for more details!
