English & Language Arts Teacher BlogThis blog is for secondary English, ELA, and language arts teachers filled with lesson plans, humor, product recommendations, teaching ideas, tips, and tricks and much more! Here’s to another good week! 🙌 But First, A Chuckle! As the vampire crept around the corner, it asked in a menacing voice, "Can I come in?" The English teacher replied, "I don't know, can you?" Annoyed and muttering curse words, the vampire backed away, foiled yet again by the English teacher's pedantry. Helpful Stuff We’re excited because our entire TPT store will be on sale for 15% off EVERYTHING from March 19-21, 2024, during our 2024 Spring Sale —so mark your calendars! You can add items directly to your TPT cart or your teacher wish list and although currently there's no way to directly share your teacher wish list, here is a great article on how to create a ClassFund campaign to get the products you want! Recommendations It’s important to remember that no amount of strategies, professional development, training, or listening to podcasts/audiobooks will help if we truly don't believe deep down that we are capable of achieving change and being successful. So we must be careful about the stories we tell ourselves & our self limiting beliefs! To help you guard your mind like the precious resource it is, check out this amazing worksheet for working on our limiting beliefs! Try it out and let us know how it goes! Helpful Stuff I think it’s vital for us as teachers to remember the satisfaction and growth students get from earning something through hard work (a grade, title, etc.) and try as hard as possible to not rob them of doing this for themselves! We must use our professional judgment to discern when it’s appropriate to modify an assignment, due date, etc., based on *truly* extenuating circumstances BUT to not rob the student the satisfaction students get by diligently earning something by pushing themselves outside their academic comfort zone. I see these missed opportunities as one of the greatest tragedies in education, but often done for the most loving & well-intentioned of reasons by teachers, with unintended consequences. Please share this with whoever you think needs to be reminded of this beautiful and powerful truth! Recommendations As I'm sure you all know by now from all our emails, I love, love, love, podcasts. I don’t know if you’re like me, but I have much more time to listen than to read but I read waaaay faster than I can listen. It’s a fun but frustrating dance, haha. Some of you have also mentioned that you would much rather read on your phone than to listen to something and that’s why I’m so excited to share what I’ve found with you! This amazing website gives you the transcription and notes from podcasts! I haven’t found one show I listen to that’s not on here, so I’m sure they will have yours! It doesn’t hurt to ask & you can always bring it back up if they are not quite receptive the first time! Recommendations Before you think I'm crazy just hear me out, OK? I know stress gets a bad rap because it can cause health problems, poor work performance, and just general dissatisfaction with life. Buuuuut, I’ve learned that there is some good forms of stress to help us be more focused and productive! Check out this powerful podcast episode from the Mindset Mentor with Robb Dial he discusses the three different types of stress and a function for each of them. Check it out and share the episode if you found it helpful and let’s help Rob reach even more people! Try it out and let us know how it goes! A Little Inspiration Because our headspace matters when we are trying to show up as our best selves for our students, our loved ones, and ourselves! “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!” -Rocky Balboa As always, please forward this to any teacher that could benefit from this message and help spread the love!

Recommendations This fantastic website lets you resize photos in bulk for your presentations, printables, and everything else! It will save you space on your devices and reduce the loading time of your documents and websites, too! Side note: a few of you have asked why sometimes to helpful stuff and recommendation sections are combined in our emails. Great question! The reason is some weeks we don’t have a whole lot to share and since we are still in the classroom, just like you, we figured we’re not gonna fill it up with a bunch of fluff our goals with these emails are get in help as much as we can and get out as soon as possible :) Try it out and let us know how it goes! A Little Inspiration Because our headspace matters when we are trying to show up as our best selves for our students, our loved ones, and ourselves! (The following links are Amazon affiliate links, but don’t worry, it does not affect your price at all :)) I think that as teachers often times we are naturally overachievers and really kick ourselves when we don’t get everything on our to-do list done, at least I know I do! And that list seems to grow longer and longer every day, filled with more important and urgent things I need to get done. That’s why I think it’s important to remember the power of deep focused work as discussed in Cal Newport’s incredible book Deep Work. So this week let’s get in some good, focused work even if it’s just for 10 minutes! As always, please forward this to any teacher that could benefit from this message and help spread the love!
