About us
Shining Scholar Education, LLC, started back in 2008 when it was just me, Charlie.
I had just started teaching and was very excited to mold young minds!
As an English teacher, I quickly realized that there was a huge gap between how we were teaching students in the classroom and how they were being tested on standardized tests.
Over the next few years, I studied and carefully dissected standardized reading comprehension tests so that I could design my instruction to better prepare the students to succeed on those tests.
While I don’t believe in “teaching to the test“, it is very empowering to familiarize students with the structure of standardized test questions, vocabulary, test-taking strategies, and annotation strategies to help maximize their understanding of the reading material and providing the best possible support and instruction for academic success.
I started using these reading comprehension tests I made, modeled after the corresponding grade’s standardized tests, as homework practice, warm-ups, group activities, and of course, as final assessments for the reading selections.
Throughout the year I could notice individual student improvement from the beginning of the year to the end; some students even began earning 10-30 points higher than they were before!
TEN TO THIRTY POINTS HIGHER!
Let that sink in!
It wasn’t just about the good grades; it was about the student achieving something that often seemed insurmountable to them and about improving their sense of self-efficacy, while also building a growth mindset that emphasized that learning and growing comes with glorious struggles.
Eventually, I was fortunate enough to team up with four other teachers, each with their unique experiences spanning across all subjects and all grade levels, in public and private schools, here in the U.S. and abroad.
This is why we have such a variety of educational materials & resources across different subject and grade levels, but our primary focus has always been creating high-quality, standards-based, rigorous reading comprehension exams for secondary English & Language Arts Reading courses.
We appreciate all of your support, feedback, and patronage to our small, teacher-and-family-owned business!
Thank you for all you do and keep changing the world,
Charlie
